One instrument. Two halves. Neither half is the proof. The seam is.
Written twice on one sheet
For centuries, the surest contract was a single skin written twice. One document, in one hand, not yet divided.
Whatever happened next, both parties would hold the same original.
Then cut apart along a line of teeth
Each party kept a half. The cut itself was the key: bring the halves together and the teeth either meet or they do not.
A copy of one half proved nothing on its own.
No two cuts are alike
The Exchequer split hazel down the grain and kept the long half, the stock. Two keys had to line up at once, the notches and the fibre.
The security was not a secret. It was the irregularity.
Proof was a physical act
Two halves laid together, in front of each other. No registry. No notary. Nothing standing in the gap.
Local. Instant. Symmetric.
Then it became a recital
A statute provided that a deed calling itself indented had that effect whether or not it ever was. The proof left the artifact and moved into other people’s records.
Every trust model since has been a policy standing where a physical fact used to be.
Dentate means toothed
The same word names a small folded structure in the human brain: the dentate gyrus, one of the few places where an adult brain keeps growing new neurons, for life.
Its work is keeping nearly identical memories distinct, so that what you know stays separable, and findable.
A record that keeps being made
Every entry is a new cell in the record. Nothing is ever deleted; connections decay, content does not.
A record designed to outlive its readers is a different object from a cache designed to serve them.
And every cell can prove itself
Each entry is sealed to the one before it, tamper-evident by construction, timestamped where anyone can check. What you knew, and when you knew it, provable to someone who does not trust you.
The two halves of the old instrument, made permanent: the memory, and the proof it carries.
It runs on your own infrastructure
Ownership is not a policy that can be amended after an acquisition. It is the shape of the system.
There is no vendor position from which your record could become someone else’s training corpus, because there is no pipeline for it to cross.
